MUSIC PARENT’S ASSOCIATION

MINUTES

June 5, 2006

The meeting was called to order by President Richard Anderson at 7:05 p.m.  There were 11 members present.  The Minutes for the May meeting were accepted as printed and handed out.

Treasurer’s Report:  Pat Brune was absent.  The audit of the year’s finances is being worked on.

Department Reports:

Instrumental Department:  The band camp letter is about ready to be sent.  The letter to the eighth grade students and parents is still being worked on.  For the most part, band camp will be in the stadium.  The Color Guard will be sponsored by Sarah Larson, who is on the high school faculty.  Camp for the Color Guard will probably be in the middle of July.  Right now there are six Color Guard members.

Committee Reports:

Membership:  MPA membership is still at 83 families.

Communications:  No report.

Trailer/Transportation:  We talked a little about the need for a BIG trailer.  We’ll use four buses on road trips.

Awards/Recognition:  No report.

Ways and Means:  Susan Anderson talked about the Pirate Card fundraiser.  She suggested the kids take orders and then we won’t have to buy the cards up-front.  The District-wide “character words” could be put on the cards.  We may sell these at student enrollment in August.  We’ll also sell Cherrydale products again.  A Motion was made (Susan Anderson) to have Premier Incentives make 200 Pirate Cards.  The Motion was seconded and passed.

The Country Mart card fundraiser has already brought in over $1,800, and we’ll get another check soon.   We’ll use the Country Mart and the Cherrydale fundraisers again next year.

Old Business:

Richard Anderson and Bruce and Sharron Breslow will work on the senior yard signs.

We need committee chairmen for Ways and Means, Away Tailgates and Home Tailgates.

We discussed the proposed change to the Bylaws (the “points of clarification” sentence that will be added as an Addendum to the Bylaws).

Article II will read:  “In order to support and enhance the Platte County music programs, the association shall provide encouragement and recognition for the students; furnish assistance to the music directors; promote parental involvement; and supply a communications network between the school, the home, and the community.  WHILE WE SUPPORT THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT, IT IS THE MUSIC DIRECTORS’ RESPONSIBILITY TO CLARIFY WHAT TYPE OF SUPPORT IS NEEDED AND WHEN IT IS DESIRED.”  (The capitalized section is the added part.)

A Motion was made, seconded, and passed that this Addendum be added to the Bylaws.  The Secretary will add this Addendum to the Bylaws in the permanent records of MPA.

New Business:

Mr. Bonsignore asked if MPA can purchase digital storage devices (flash drives) for the band directors.

The cost of cleaning the band uniforms has gone up.  Susan Anderson will check with Premier Dry Cleaners about their price.  We discussed uniform repairs and the likelihood of some rather major alterations needing to be done because we will not be getting additional uniforms for the drum line.

The marching band schedule was discussed.  Mr. Jones noted the following competition dates:  September 23--Raytown; September 30--Clarinda; October 14--Lee’s Summit North; October 21--Northwest Missouri State; November 5--Show with NWMSU.  Home football games are:  September 1, September 22, October 13 (Homecoming), October 20 (Light Show), and November 2 (Senior Night).

Adjournment:  The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 p.m.  The next meeting will be on August 7, 2006, at 7:00 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,

Ruth Wilson

MPA Secretary
