MUSIC PARENT
ASSOCIATION
MINUTES
November 17, 2005
The meeting was called to
order by President Richard Anderson at 7:00 p.m. There were 25
people present. The Minutes from October meeting were
accepted as transmitted by e-mail.
Treasurer
Report: Pat Brune reported there is $4,883.28 in the checking
account and $4,711.86 in savings.
Department Reports:
Vocal Department:
No report was submitted.
Color Guard: Erik
Bayer again mentioned the Sonic card fundraiser.
Instrumental
Department: Mr. Jones mentioned the possibility of the football
team going to State competition the Friday after Thanksgiving.
Some parents of football players have expressed concern that the band
might not be there to play. Mr. Jones said 57 students indicated
they would be in town that weekend, and he can take them to State as a
pep band. The Booster Club will perhaps pay the band
admission cost. A bus will be chartered, and we need to take the
trailer for the equipment.
Mr. Jones spoke at some
length about the MMEA Convention. Sectionals are going
well. Since we e not spending the night he will do some special
things for the kids, using the band budget. First, he ordered a
hooded sweatshirt for everyone. These will be ordered in December
so the kids can wear them in January before they go. (Parents can
order a similar sweatshirt, without a hood, and pay by a check made out
to PCHS Band.) On the way home the kids will eat at a nice
restaurant. Everyone will also receive a chenille patch. An
information letter will be sent home soon regarding performance times,
etc. Parents who want to attend the concert need to let Mr. Jones
know right away.
Space is tight for the
performing groups at the concert. Concern was expressed about the
French horns sound being muffled. Mr. Jones will have plexiglass
to put behind that section as a sound baffle. One of the pieces
asks for a harp. He has hired a harpist who will charge $750 for
transportation, time, hotel, etc.
Mr. Jones is asking MPA
to feed the kids en route. They need more than a breakfast
bar and juice to keep up the energy needed to do a first-class
job. After arriving at Tan Tar A they be put into the
performance cycle at 9:00 a.m., and will perform at 11:45.
The scheduled December
18th band concert has been canceled. Instead, there will be a
full-blown dress rehearsal concert on January 19th. Programs will
be available, and Mr. Jones is asking MPA to host a reception for the
band after this concert.
In addition to costs
previously mentioned, the MMEA programs will cost about $2,100.
Hume Music donated $500 for the programs and Wal-Mart has donated
$1,000, which we can use. We need to rent a truck (20- or
24-foot) to transport the equipment. The Trailer Committee will
cover the cost of this. A Motion was made by George Bundy, and
passed, that MPA give $2,500 to the band to help with MMEA
expenses. This amount includes the $1,000 Wal-Mart
donation. We can move money from savings to checking if we need
to.
In late March we usually
have a concert before contest. This year we have the concert
with the North Platte High School band. One piece will be with
the combined bands. The MPA of both schools will combine to
feed the kids before the concert.
Jazz Band: Mr.
Bonsignore mentioned All-District Jazz Band, which is November
19th. Nine of the 20 members of this band are from Platte
County. He used jazz band funds to buy lunch. The Northwest
Jazz Ensemble plays right after the concert. The jazz band is
giving short concerts for several schools in our district on December
16th. Mr. Bonsignore noted that jazz band money now needs to be
deposited to the school account instead of being kept in
MPA account. The jazz band dates are on the schedule handed
out. Evening of Jazz will be May 5th.
Committee Reports:
Membership: Susan
Anderson reported there are now 76 MPA members.
Newsletter/Communication:
Nothing new to report.
Trailer/Transportation:
Will be covered under New Business.
Ways and Means:
Nothing new to report.
Awards and
Recognition: Laurie Mossman is working on the plaque.
Home Tailgates: MPA
made a little money on the Senior Night dinner.
Away Tailgates:
Left-over food will be used for the trip to Tan Tar A.
Old Business: Dana
Babcock reported that we can purchase 25 large storage tubs for $6.00
each. She made a Motion, which passed, that we purchase
these. (Sharron Breslow offered to check on the cost of ordering
these tubs through her husband company.)
The following items will
remain on the Agenda for a future meeting:
Possible plans for a 2006 or 2007 Field Show
Competition here;
Possible band and choir websites with links to the
District website;
Senior band member yard signs;
Fundraiser idea collect and sell used
instruments;
Form an alumni band to play at a home
football game.
New Business:
Ron Shults noted the
Trailer Committee wants to tag all our instrument cases so there is
less danger of losing them. This will cost about $100. Mr.
Jones said there is a data base on the computer that would be useful
for printing labels, but there are problems with it right now.
George Bundy made a Motion, which passed, that we do what
necessary to put these labels on the cases. Also, this committee
wants to buy a toolbox and some tools to carry in the trailer. It
will be researched and reported on later.
It was mentioned that
Wal-Mart will donate $1,000 to MPA as a community grant.
Miscellaneous:
There was some discussion
about having Color Guard money a part of MPA . It was
decided that, for now, we keep their money separate.
The next MPA meeting will
be Monday, January 9, at 7:00 p.m.
Karen Jacobs made a
Motion to adjourn. Meeting was adjourned at 8:27 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted,
Ruth Wilson
MPA Secretary
