MINUTES

October 9, 2006

In honor of Jay Jones, who just earned his Doctorate, we spent some time at the beginning visiting and eating.

The meeting was called to order by President Richard Anderson at 7:27 p.m.  The Minutes for the September 11th meeting need to be amended as follows:  Since the Secretary was not present at that meeting, she can’t sign off on the Minutes, which were taken by another MPA member.  And, the amount MPA will repay to Dr. Jones’ band account is $1,641.00.  A Motion was made (Keith Robinson) and seconded (Jim Poole) to accept the Minutes as amended.  Motion passed.

Treasurer’s Report:  Pat Brune made a correction from her last report, and the beginning balance shown of $3,152.67 is the correct amount.  The ending balance is $5,650.45, plus we just received a check for $4,000.00 from Booster Club.  Susan Anderson said we’ll want to have the Pirate cards separated out to show the “in and out” of the money earned on those.

Department Reports:

Band:  Dr. Jones expressed appreciation for our party.  He said that his advisers want him to go on to the university level, but he wants to stay here in Platte County, where the band program has so much support.  He talked about the Mo. West Tournament of Champions and the Lee’s Summit North competition.  The football players want a black-out game, so that will be October 20, the same night as the Light Show.  Senior Night is November 2, and the show with Northwest Missouri State is November 5.  He would like to have a lot of support for this, and would like a parent bus to go.

Auditions for the Wind Ensemble (around 50 students) and the Concert Band (around 80 students) will be on December 19.  He’s hiring judges from outside, and would like to have MPA feed them a soup and sandwich lunch.

Both bands will go to contest.  He mentioned that most larger schools have try-outs and more than one band.  The number of solos and ensembles that can go to contest will be limited in a year or two.  The Winter Concert will be December 10.

Jazz Band:  The first concert is October 17.  The jazz band shirts came.  All-District Jazz Band auditions are November 4.  The tentative date for the District tour is December 15.  Regarding jazz festivals, schools are sending information to Mr. Bonsignore so he will be able to decide which to attend.

Color Guard:  The captain quit and a new one has been chosen.  We have new uniforms.  Mrs. Larson said she wants to recruit at Barry School and the Middle School.

Student Teacher:  Erika Lipiec reported the drum line is working hard.

Booster Club Liaison:  Syl Washington thanked those who have helped in the concession stand.  He wants to keep a list of who works and when.

Committee Reports:

Membership:  Susan Anderson reported there are 83 members.  She wants to follow up with phone calls on two additional members.

Communications:  Stacy Evans said a newsletter is going out soon.

Trailer/Transportation:  There is nothing new to report.

Awards/Recognition:  There is nothing new to report.

Home Tailgates:  Marion Poole said people responded quickly to provide food for the October 13 meal.  We’ll set up at 4:15 so kids can come eat when they’re done with pictures.  Senior Night—the seniors voted for BBQ from Smoke Box BBQ.  The cost is $7.00/person, kids 12 & under, $4.00.  Every family should bring a dessert to share.  It will be held in the new Middle School cafeteria.  A Motion was made (George Bundy) and seconded (Ron Shults) to have MPA pay for the band kids’ meals (at a cost of approximately $1,050).  Motion passed.  The Smoke Box bid is $1,800 for 300 people.

Away Tailgates:  Nora Bean said there won’t be a meal served at Lee’s Summit, but there will be one at Mo. West.

Ways and Means:  Gate workers are still needed for the antique show.

Old Business:

Parent Shirts – Stacy needs the orders by October 20.  T-shirts and sweatshirts are available.

Light Sticks – Light sticks have been ordered and MPA will purchase packing tape.  Ron Shults made a Motion (George Bundy seconded it) to have MPA pay for the light sticks this year (approx. $1,300).  Motion passed.

New Business:

Homecoming Parade – Richard Anderson wants parents to march.  We also talked about having the trailer (with the logo) and the flat-bed behind the band.

Miscellaneous:

Uniforms – This is an ongoing project, with buttons and zippers always in need of repair.

Adjournment:  The meeting was adjourned at 8:39 p.m.  The next meetings are:  November 13 and January 8 (no December meeting).

Respectfully Submitted,

Ruth Wilson
